The company began with a partnership with the British Motor Corporation, producing Austin and Morris commercial vehicles under license, progressing in 1966 to include a range of trucks, vans, agriculture tractors and diesel engines. Playing an important role in the development of the Turkish Automotive Industry, BMC has made a considerable contribution by accomplishing the production of the first diesel engines in Turkey, followed by the introduction of the adaptation from gasoline to diesel engines in1876. In addition to the production of complete vehicles, BMC started to manufacture industrial engines, generators, marine engines and military products, needed to support Turkey’s fast growing industry. Amongst BMC’s achievements throughout the years was the introduction of the Leyland 30 van to the market, which was the first light commercial vehicle in the Leyland series. In 1983, BMC produced the Yavuz series trucks, which were the first turbo engined commercial vehicles in Turkey. In 1985, Yavuz was superseded by the Faith range of trucks incorporating the new Cummins diesel engines, BMC had once again proved that it ranked amongst the strongest commercial vehicle manufacturers in the world. |

In 1989, a new growth strategy was determined after all the shares of the company had been acquired by Cukurova Holdings, the biggest conglomerate of Turkey today. Consequently, BMC signed a cooperation agreement in 1990 with the pre-eminent Italian design house Pininfarina, the objective being to create a wholly domestic, purpose-built, unique cab. As a result of 6years of intensive work and the investment of 120 million USD, BMC introduced the new Professional Range of trucks to the market in January 1997. The Professional series enabled BMC to be internationally recognized, providing a worldwide prestige to the Turkish Automotive Industry. Continuing to operate under the structure of Cukurova Holding, with its annual turnover of 9.1 billion USD and total assets amounting to 19.5 billion USD, employing 34000 staff in 101 companies currently active in the sectors of banking, insurance, telecommunication, steel, textile, mining, paper, chemistry, transportation and construction, BMC is the only Turkish automotive corporation that is carrying out its own product design, development and engineering studies without relying upon any foreign companies. Also worthy of note was the fact that BMC was the first Automotive Company in the world to use the Cummins B Series engines - manufacturing Cummins engines under license. |
